Very Scarce Original Vintage Sport Poster Rome Olympic Games Italy Testa Russian
About the Item
Very scarce original vintage sport poster for the XVII Olympic Games in Rome featuring a great design by Armando Testa (1917-1992) with a Russian text. Design depicts the twin brothers Romulus and Remus being suckled by the Capitoline Wolf (the ancient story from Roman mythology that led to the founding of Rome in c.750BC), on top of a pillar marked Roma MCMLX / Rome 1960 above an athlete crowing himself and holding a palm leaf of victory with other people looking towards him depicted on the column, the Olympic Rings symbol and the bold black title text in Russian above - Игры XVII Олимпиады Рим. Held from 25 August to 11 September 1960, the Games of the XVII Olympiad was hosted by Rome Italy; the 1960 Summer Olympics was won by the Soviet Union USSR (103 medals) with USA (71 medals) in second place and Italy (36 medals) in third place. This poster was the winning design in a competition held by the Olympic Arts Committee under the guidelines of the Italian National Olympic Committee CONI published in 11 languages. Good condition, restored tears, restored paper loss on right edge, minor staining, backed on linen.
