About the Item

Thomas Williamson (1758-1817) and Samuel Howitt (1765-1822) Preparing for a Tiger Hunt From: Oriental Field Sports being a complete, detailed, and accurate description of the wild sports of the East and exhibiting, in a novel and interesting manner, the natural history of the elephant, the rhinoceros, the tiger... and other undomesticated animals... London: Edward Orme, 1807. Printed before titles. Aquatint with original hand-coloring Sheet size: approx. 16.7 x 25.6 cm Howitt based his superb aquatints on Captain Thomas Williamson’s original on-site sketches. Howitt was a keen sportsman, hunter, rider, and angler. “A self-taught artist, he turned professional when financial difficulties forced him to earn a living. He drew on his enthusiasm and knowledge as a sportsman and produced sporting and natural history paintings, etchings, and illustrations. He sometimes worked in oils but more frequently in watercolours, and he was an accomplished etcher” (Ruth Cohn for DNB).

  • 1780 Floral Spring Bouquet, Louis Tessier, Folio, Tulip, Poeny, Hand Coloured
    Located in Norwich, GB
Floral Bouquet engraved after Louis Tessier for "Livre de Corbeilles et Vases de Fleurs" Engraved by Jean-Jacques Avril Spring Bouquet with Ranunculus and Tulip. Measures: 36.4 x 27.7 cm "Avril l'aine, Sculp", in text, lower right; "L. Tessier, del" lower right. The six plates for "Livre de Corbeilles et Vases de Fleurs" (A Book of Baskets and Vases of Flowers) were engraved by J.J. Avril after paintings by Louis Tessier. The plates were hand colored and the coloring varies from impression to impression. This impression is a beautiful example of Tessier's eye for design, with his elegant use of space and the vivid color combinations by Avril. Despite the formality of the still life, the fun, haphazard arrangement of these fantastic flowers makes for a charming yet highly stylized image. Jean Jaacques Avril (the elder) was born in Paris in 1744 and studied architecture but became a student of engraver Jan Georges...

  • Old Hand-Coloured Aquatint of a Mandan Village Near Fort Clark, Texas, ca.1840
    Located in Langweer, NL
Antique print titled 'Mih-Tutta-Hangkusch'. Hand-coloured aquating of a Mandan village by Salathé after Bodmer. In response to raids by its neighbours, the Mandan Tribe consolidated its people in two main villages: Mih-Tutta-Hang-Kusch and Ruhptare. Mih-Tutta-Hang-Kusch, the larger of these, is represented here by Bodmer as it appeared in the summer of 1833. Close to Fort Clark, it consisted of sixty-five earth lodges or houses, many with scaffolding around the houses that was used for drying corn and other food. The village's position, high on a promontory jutting out into the Missouri, made it easily defensible. However, all is tranquil in this scene as the women in the foreground collect driftwood using...
