Antique bird print titled 'Sanderlingl'. Old bird print depicting the sanderling. This print originates from 'Birds of Europe' by J. Gould (1832-1837).
The sanderling (Calidris alba) is a small wading bird. The name derives from Old English sand-yrðling, "sand-ploughman". The genus name is from Ancient Greek kalidris or skalidris, a term used by Aristotle for some grey-coloured waterside birds. The specific, alba, is Latin for "white".
It is a circumpolar Arctic breeder, and is a long-distance migrant, wintering south to South America, South Europe, Africa, and Australia. It is highly gregarious in winter, sometimes forming large flocks on coastal mudflats or sandy beaches.
Artists and Engravers: John Gould (1804 - 1881) was an English ornithologist and bird artist.

John Gould
John Gould was an English ornithologist and bird artist. He published several monographs on birds, illustrated by plates that he produced with the assistance of his wife, Elizabeth Gould, and several other artists including Edward Lear, Henry Constantine Richter, Joseph Wolf and William Matthew Hart. Gould has been considered the father of bird study in Australia, and the Gould League in Australia is named after him. His identification of the birds now nicknamed Darwin's finches played a role in the inception of Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. Gould's work is referenced in Charles Darwin's book, On the Origin of Species.
