About the Item
Griffon Vulture Antique Dutch Bird Print by Sepp and Nozeman, c.1770
This large-format hand-coloured copper engraving, labeled Vultur Percnopterus, actually depicts the Eurasian Griffon Vulture (Gyps fulvus), rather than the smaller Egyptian Vulture as the title suggests. The identification is clear from the bird’s massive size, pale ruff, hooked beak, and brown plumage—features that match the Griffon Vulture, one of Europe's largest birds of prey. The composition shows the bird standing upright on a mossy branch, claws gripping firmly, its head turned slightly to the left in a confident, alert pose.
This print originates from the landmark publication Nederlandsche Vogelen, issued in parts from 1770 to 1829 in Amsterdam. It was the first comprehensive ornithological study undertaken in the Netherlands and remains one of the most ambitious natural history projects of the 18th century. The work was a collaboration between naturalists Cornelis Nozeman and Martinus Houttuyn, with printing, illustration, and hand-colouring overseen by the Sepp family, particularly Christiaan Andreas Sepp and Jan Christiaan Sepp. These prints were created with scientific integrity, but also artistic elegance, aiming to portray each species close to life size and in its natural environment.
The Eurasian Griffon Vulture is a carrion feeder with a range across Southern Europe, North Africa, and parts of Asia. It soars on thermals with broad wings and short tail, often seen circling high above mountainous terrain. Its depiction in this plate, with its robust talons and solemn dignity, conveys the commanding presence of the species. Despite the taxonomic mislabeling, this print is a valuable and highly decorative historical document—representing not only early ornithological knowledge but also the evolving precision of European natural history art.
Collectors of antique ornithology prints and 18th-century Dutch natural science will value this plate for its size, fine hand-colouring, and excellent state of preservation.
Condition report
Very good condition. Strong impression with full margins. Light, even age-toning and minor creasing typical of laid paper of this era. A few faint marks in the outer blank margins only. No tears or restoration. Colouring is well-preserved and detailed.
Framing suggestion
For best presentation, mount with an off-white or warm cream mat to highlight the bird’s earthy brown and grey hues. A dark mahogany or ebonised oak frame adds strength and formality, in keeping with 18th-century Dutch tastes. Consider museum-grade glass and acid-free backing to preserve the integrity of the paper and pigments. Display as a single statement piece or alongside other large-format bird prints from the Nederlandsche Vogelen series.
