About the Item
Antique French Architectural Print Maison de Jardinier by Pierre Chabat c.1900
This antique architectural print, titled 'Maison de Jardinier', was designed by the French architect Pierre Chabat and originates from the series La Brique et la Terre Cuite (The Brick and Terracotta), published in the late 19th century to around 1900. The plate (Pl. XIX, 2e Série) illustrates a detailed architectural design of a gardener’s house in France, rendered in richly colored lithography.
The composition presents both sectional and elevation views of the building, highlighting the decorative use of brick and terracotta in French domestic architecture of the period. The façade is depicted with intricate polychrome brickwork, patterned wall sections, and a finely arched doorway, complete with chimney detailing. The print also includes floor plans (ground floor and first floor), as well as a close-up of the decorative chimney section, showing the ornamental integration of ceramic elements and geometric brick patterns.
Pierre Chabat (1827–1892), a French architect and professor, specialized in architectural ornament and construction techniques. His work in La Brique et la Terre Cuite demonstrates the artistic and technical possibilities of brick and terracotta, which were widely celebrated in French architecture during the late 19th century. Prints from this series are appreciated today not only as architectural records but also as decorative works, valued for their precision, color, and aesthetic appeal.
This plate would make an excellent addition to a collection of architectural drawings, a decorative wall piece for an interior with historical or industrial design themes, or as a scholarly reference for architects and historians.
Condition report: Very good condition with fresh, vivid colors. Minor toning in the margins consistent with age. Plate mark visible. No significant tears or stains.
Framing tips: Best displayed in a simple dark wood or walnut frame with an ivory mat to enhance the fine architectural lines and warm tones of the brick design. A thin red or terracotta inner mount could further emphasize the color scheme.
