Antique Print of a Dromedary Camel, a Llama, a Guanaco and a Vicuña, circa 1820
About the Item
Original antique print of various species of camel. This engraved print originates from a very rare unknown Dutch work. The plates are similar to the plates in the famous German work: ‘Bilderbuch fur Kinder' by F.J. Bertuch, published 1790-1830 in Weimar. This could be Dutch edition of this work (no references found), or a work that used the Bertuch plates. Published circa 1820.
This image depicts a series of animals, from the "Dieren XXIII" and "Quadrup. XXIII" categories, which translates to "Animals XXIII" and "Quadrupeds XXIII" from Dutch, suggesting these are the twenty-third set of animals in the series.
In this engraving:
1. On the top right, there is a large camel with a single hump, which indicates it is a dromedary camel. The level of detail in the drawing suggests a focus on accuracy and the camel's physical features, such as its hump, long legs, and distinctive facial profile.
2. On the bottom left, there is an animal that resembles a llama, identifiable by its smaller size compared to the camel, its long neck, and its more streamlined body.
3. On the top left, there's another camelid which appears to be a guanaco, recognized by its smaller size, shorter fur, and the lack of a hump.
4. Finally, on the bottom right, there is an illustration of a vicuña, the smallest camelid, characterized by its delicate build and fine fleece.
These illustrations are likely intended for educational or scientific purposes, with each animal rendered in a realistic style and isolated against a minimal background to emphasize its form and stature. The camelids depicted here are native to different parts of the world, with the dromedary camel being native to the Middle East and the Horn of Africa, and the llama, guanaco, and vicuña being South American species.
