About the Item

Untitled print of garden architecture. It shows garden buildings. This print originates from 'Magazijn van tuin-sieraden'. The book is compiled by Gijsbert van Laar, providing a survey - chiefly inspired by English horticulture - of the way in which the proud owners of gardens can make their moderate and small plots look more beautiful and decorative. He questioned: ""what could be a more appropriate relaxation from his work for the imperturbable, industrious and hard-working Dutchman than to devote himself for some days of the week to the quietude of country life"". In 190 plates Van Laar gives examples of structures, bridges, garden furniture, and sculptures that may transform the traditionally practical Dutch gardens into true gardens of delight. There is no doubt that the book has had an enormous influence on Dutch nineteenth-century gardens. Artists and Engravers: Gijsbert van Laar (1768 - Alphen/Zwammerdam, 1820) is a Dutch landscape architect, who started a tree nursery in Alkmaar towards the end of the eighteenth century. Antique prints have long been appreciated for both their aesthetic and investment value. They were the product of engraved, etched or lithographed plates. These plates were handmade out of wood or metal, which required an incredible level of skill, patience and craftsmanship. Whether you have a house with Victorian furniture or more contemporary decor an old engraving can enhance your living space.
