Antique Print of Natives in Florida Making Offerings to the Sun God, ca.1730

About the Item

Description: Antique print titled 'Sacrifice que les Floridiens sont au Soleil, de leurs Premiers nez' and 'Ofrande que les Floridiens sont d'un Cerf au soleil'. Two copper engraved views on one sheet, each with its own border, showing Floridian sacrifices to the sun. The upper image is filled with young women dancing near the "chosen one" with priests off to one side. The lower image has many priests offering a deer on the end of a tall pole to the Sun God. This print originates from 'Naaukeurige beschryving der godtsdienst-plichten, kerk-zeden en gewoontens van alle volkeren der waereldt.', a Dutch edition or its French edition 'Ceremonies et coutumes Religieuses...' , by A. Moubach, 1727-1738 (French edition 1721-1725). An English edition called 'Ceremonies and religious Rites of the various nations of the known world....', appeared in 1733. It was the most elaborate history of world religion published up to that time. The plates in this work were adapted by B. Picart and others from various sources including de Bry. Artists and Engravers: Bernard Picart (11 June 1673 – 8 May 1733), was a French engraver, son of Etienne Picart, also an engraver. Condition: Good, general age-related toning. Minor wear, blank verso. Please study image carefully.
