About the Item

Antique Print of the Ribbonfish (Trachypterus Bogmarus) – Paris, 1845 This striking hand-colored lithograph features Le Trachiptère Bogmare (Trachypterus bogmarus), a rare deep-sea ribbonfish, drawn from the French scientific expedition *Voyage en Islande et au Groenland*, published in Paris by Arthus Bertrand in 1845. The ribbonfish is illustrated in full profile with its distinctive elongated, laterally compressed body, flowing red dorsal fin, and transparent pectoral structures. Its metallic silver-gray tones and vividly red fins give it an almost mythical appearance—an impression that historically contributed to tales of sea serpents and other marine legends. In the lower left, the plate includes anatomical insets: * The fish’s streamlined body shape (as seen from above), * A view of the jaw structure, * Illustrations of internal features related to movement and respiration. This is plate “Poissons Pl. 23” and was drawn by Louis Bévalet, engraved by H. Blanchard. The refined lines and delicate color work are typical of the best mid-19th-century French natural history illustrations, created both for scientific documentation and public admiration. The ribbonfish is a pelagic species rarely seen at the surface, and its unusual body plan and size have made it a subject of fascination in marine biology. At the time of publication, such specimens were rarely collected, making this plate especially valuable for its early documentation. The *Voyage en Islande et au Groenland* was a government-sponsored natural history exploration focused on the North Atlantic and Arctic environments. Its zoological volumes are now considered landmarks in the history of marine science and illustration. Condition: Good condition. Minor foxing in the margins and slight toning consistent with age. Strong plate mark and clean image field. No tears or repairs. Framing tips: This dramatic image works beautifully in a minimal black or silver frame with a white or pale gray mat to accentuate the metallic and red hues. Suitable for display in marine-themed settings, natural history interiors, or cabinets of curiosity. Use museum-grade glass to protect the subtle hand-coloring.
