About the Item

Antique title page 'Elephanten Führer' by Johann Elias Ridinger, Augsburg 1741 This striking engraving serves as the elaborate title page to Johann Elias Ridinger’s celebrated elephant series, based on drawings made by P. F. von Gadenus. The series was inspired by the arrival of a Persian embassy in 1741, which traveled from Isfahan to Constantinople and drew immense attention in Europe for the exotic animals in its retinue. The composition presents a richly dressed man pointing toward a large boulder inscribed with the publication details of the work, while in the background another figure rides upon a caparisoned elephant. The inscription details that the elephants were sketched from life by Gadenus and engraved by Ridinger in Augsburg. Ridinger (1698–1767) was among the most prominent animal engravers of the 18th century, known for his lifelike depictions of both European and exotic species. His works were prized by aristocrats, scholars, and collectors, and this elephant series stands out as one of the earliest and most detailed visual accounts of these animals in Europe. The present sheet introduces the series, setting the stage for the various portrayals of elephants “in different positions” as witnessed in the Persian field camp near Scutari. As a historical artifact, the engraving not only documents the fascination with elephants in the Enlightenment era but also reflects broader themes of diplomacy, travel, and natural history that captivated the European imagination. This title page is particularly significant for collectors as it contextualizes the entire series and bears Ridinger’s distinctive style of framing animals within a theatrical yet naturalistic setting. Condition report: Strong impression on laid paper with wide margins. Minor toning and small spots in the blank margin, not affecting the image. Plate mark clearly visible. Overall very good condition. Framing tips: Best displayed with a wide cream or ivory mat that emphasizes the engraved detail. A dark wood or ebonized frame adds depth, while a gilt inner edge highlights the baroque character of Ridinger’s work. Technique: Engraving Maker: Johann Elias Ridinger, Augsburg, 1741
