Antique Zoological Study: Weasel Anatomy, 18th Century Handcolored Print, c.1750

About the Item

This rather large original antique engraving on strong paper depicts two images: one of a weasel in its natural habitat and another of its skeletal structure. The German title "Das weise Wiesel" translates to "The White Weasel" in English. This plate, numbered XXV, is a hand-colored copperplate engraving from Johann Daniel Meyer's work, "Angenehmer und nützlicher Zeit-Vertreib curioser Vorstellungen allerhand, auf dem Land und im Wasser sich befindender und nährender Thiere" (Pleasant and Useful Pastime of Curious Representations of All Kinds of Animals Found on Land and in Water), published in Nuremberg by J.J. Fleischmann & A. Bieling between 1748 and 1756. This work aimed to illustrate and describe various animals in detail, serving both educational and artistic purposes. The detailed rendering of the animal alongside its skeleton offers a comprehensive insight into both the external appearance and internal anatomy of the weasel. More about the Weasel: Weasels are small, carnivorous mammals known for their slender bodies, short legs, and long, flexible bodies. They belong to the Mustelidae family, which also includes ferrets, otters, and minks. Weasels are skilled hunters and are known for their agility and ability to catch prey much larger than themselves. They have a varied diet, consisting mainly of small mammals, birds, eggs, and insects. Weasels are found in various habitats worldwide, including forests, grasslands, and even urban areas. They are known for their elusive nature and are often difficult to spot in the wild due to their small size and quick movements. In folklore and literature, weasels are sometimes associated with cunning and stealth, likely due to their hunting behavior. However, they are also appreciated for their role in controlling rodent populations and contributing to the balance of ecosystems.
