Art 1960s

About the Item

An intriguing cubistic construction created in 1968 by Jan Slothouber and William Graatsma. The lithograph measures 70 x 70 cm. After an architectural training Jan Slothouber (1918 - 2007) and William Graatsma (1925) worked as architects / designers from 1955 for the Dutch State Mines (DSM). Here they designed the packing, product applications, advertisements and exhibitions and gave the company a recognizable face. Within the information service of DSM the two had an unique position: They could build their own world and developed the principle of cubic constructions. The cubic as a main point brought restriction but also clarity in the multiplicity of possibilities according to Slothouber and Graatsma. The use of several materials adds each time new aspects to the functioning of the cubic constructions. Almost accidentally Slothouber and Graatsma entered the world of the visual arts. The Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam asked them to make the exhibition with the title Vier kanten: maat, vorm, kleur, letter (Four Sides: size, shape, color, letter). After that they founded the Centre for Cubic Constructions (CCC). Several fascinating presentations followed, among that in the Art & Project gallery in 1968 and the Dutch presentation at The Venice Biennial in 1970.

Jo Niemeyer Variation 1988 serigraph/silkscreen print on paper. Ltd. 63/150 and signed by artist with pencil in the bottom right hand corner. For many of us Jo Niemeyer is not the most common name in constructivist art. However, Niemeyer has a loyal following of admirers in Germany and Finland Working with the primary colors that Piet Mondrian used too in his STIJL period the compositions look at first glance not that original, but study them closely and you will notice a much more complex composition with movement on the works by Niemeyer. Making these stand out on their own. Jo Niemeyer was born in 1946 in the German village...

  • 1960, Silk Screen Print "Peace One" by Reiko Momiyame, Japan
    Located in Weesp, NL
"Peace One" by Reiko Momiyame. A rare and beautiful Pop Art period silk screen print signed in pencil by the artist. The print is in great condition with strong bright vibrant colors of the period. Pop art is an art movement that emerged in the United Kingdom and the United States during the mid- to late-1950s. The movement presented a challenge to traditions of fine art by including imagery from popular and mass culture, such as advertising, comic books and mundane mass-produced objects. One of its aims is to use images of popular culture in art, emphasizing the banal or kitschy elements of any culture, most often through the use of irony. It is also associated with the artists' use of mechanical means of reproduction or rendering techniques. In pop art, material is sometimes visually removed from its known context, isolated, or combined with unrelated material. Amongst the early artists that shaped the pop art movement were Eduardo Paolozzi and Richard Hamilton in Britain, and Larry Rivers, Ray...
