Dutch Peasant Woman of the Middle Ages: A Portrait of Rural Life, 1847

About the Item

Title: "Dutch Peasant Woman of the Middle Ages: A Portrait of Rural Life" Description: This delicate print depicts a Dutch peasant woman from the Middle Ages, evoking a sense of simplicity and the rustic charm of rural life during that era. The woman is portrayed in a moment of stillness, perhaps pausing from her daily labor to be captured by the artist. She is dressed in a traditional, practical costume consisting of a vibrant yellow apron wrapped around a deep green skirt, which would protect her clothing underneath while performing her daily tasks. The apron is not just utilitarian but also adds a splash of color to her attire, perhaps indicative of a love for personal expression even within the constraints of her societal role. Her upper body is clothed in a soft pink bodice that fits snugly, providing warmth and modesty. The bodice is complemented by long sleeves of a lighter shade, possibly undersleeves, which were common in the period's dress. On her head, she wears a yellow headscarf that serves both as protection from the elements and as a symbol of her marital status, as married women in many European cultures covered their hair. The headscarf is neatly tied at the back, suggesting tidiness and attention to the mores of her time. In one hand, she holds a broom, a tool of her everyday life, signifying her hardworking nature and the daily maintenance of her home and surroundings. The broom could also symbolize domestic order and the woman's role in maintaining the household. Her footwear consists of simple but sturdy shoes with straps, appropriate for walking on the uneven and possibly muddy rural terrain. They are practical, yet their color is coordinated with the rest of her outfit, showing an attention to aesthetics that transcends class boundaries. The background of the print is minimal, directing the viewer's focus to the woman and her clothing, which tells a story of a life led with diligence and quiet dignity. Through this print, we gain insight into the everyday life of a peasant woman in the Middle Ages, her role in society, and the cultural significance of her attire. The colors have a nice glow over them. Historically, egg whites, known as glair, and sometimes egg yolk were indeed used in illumination and painting, particularly in manuscripts, to give colors a brighter appearance and to add a sheen or gloss to the work. This technique was quite common during the Middle Ages and into the Renaissance. Egg whites can be applied as a varnish over pigments to enhance their brightness and to protect the colors. This application could make the colors appear more vivid and also add a slight glossy sheen to the surface of the image. Egg yolk, on the other hand, was commonly used as a binding agent in paint. It forms the basis of tempera paint, a medium that was widely used before the advent of oil painting. Egg yolk helps to create a durable and long-lasting color that adheres well to various surfaces. In the context of the print from 1847, it's less likely that egg whites or yolks were used directly on the print, as by that time, commercial printing processes would have been more advanced and less reliant on such manual methods. However, if this print is a representation of an earlier style or is meant to mimic the appearance of hand-painted manuscripts, the original artists might have employed techniques or materials that gave a similar effect to those achieved with egg-based binders and varnishes.
