About the Item
École Nationale – French Architectural Lithograph from La Brique, Chipiez, c.1900
Elegant antique architectural lithograph showing the detailed elevation of the Pavillon de l’Escalier (Staircase Pavilion) of the École Nationale Professionnelle d'Armentières. This striking print highlights the polychromatic brick and terracotta façade, emphasizing the French Republican “RF” monogram at the top and the richly patterned ornamental brickwork surrounding the grand arched window. The design exemplifies the creative use of brick and tile in public architecture during the late 19th century in France.
The print originates from the celebrated architectural series La Brique et La Terre Cuite, produced under the direction of architect and author Paul Chabat around 1900. This influential work compiled exemplary structures utilizing brick and terracotta as both structural and decorative materials. Each plate from this series was printed in chromolithography to convey the vibrant coloring and texture of the designs with exceptional accuracy.
The featured architect, Charles Chipiez (1835–1901), was well known for his historical reconstructions and detailed architectural drawings. His work at Armentières displays his command of proportion and decorative richness, combining technical precision with artistic elegance.
This lithograph offers great appeal to collectors of architectural prints and decorative arts, as well as to interior designers looking for refined, classical wall art. Its strong vertical symmetry and rich tones make it especially suitable for office, library, or hallway decoration.
Condition: Very good condition with only light age toning and minor handling at the margins. No tears, stains, or holes. Colors remain vibrant, and the print is well preserved. Please study the image carefully.
Framing tips: Best suited to a frame with deep brown or black wood tones and a light cream or sandstone-colored mat, which complements the brickwork and balances the strong vertical lines.
