She has been called a pioneer in the acrylic medium. She was also a judge for the Coconut Grove Art Festival in Miami. Edna Glaubman was a pioneer in the acrylic painting medium. She helped set a new standard of technique for vibrancy, color, and depth. She studied at the Art Students League in Woodstock and New York and was both a graduate and former faculty member of Parsons School of Fine and Applied Arts in New York. Glaubman experimented in materials ranging from metal and clay sculpture, to resins and polymers. She worked with a variety of papers, inks, acrylics, pencil, charcoal and pastel. She was adept and skillful with every artistic tool from trowels and knives to brushes and pens. Her extraordinary achievement of transparency is clearly visible in her acrylic painting. The surfaces are smooth and exhibit a fine glaze, yet the underlying texture achieved with paper and paint thicknesses create a dimensionality that enhances her keen sense of perspective. Her work combines elements of pop art with abstract expressionism. The paintings are produced on Karlit or Masonite, a Swedish board with unique properties. She pioneered the use of acrylics and used an original technique where she affixed crushed paper to the boards and then employed specialized inks to achieve a final effect that resembles Javanese batik fabrics. Glaubman was equally adept using vibrant colors as well as monochromes. With the precision of a negative photograph, she effectively reversed positive and negative space in many of her compositions. Her subjects varied widely and included landscapes, portraits, horses, nudes, social gatherings, and intimate family moments. Glaubman was an important Miami, Florida Jewish artist when the city was first emerging as an important creative metropolitan center. She studied with Jacques Maroger, curator of the Louvre Museum in Paris. She was a lifelong resident of South Florida where she was an integral part of the Coconut Grove arts scene along with Tony Scornavacca, Eugene Massin, and Gigi Aramescu. She was one of the founders of the Coconut Grove Arts Festival. Selected to exhibit at the region’s premier art festivals including as the Lowe Arts Festival, the Las Olas Arts Festival and the South Miami Arts Festival, she was hired by renowned architect Maurice Lapidus to produce original art for the rooms at the Americana Hotel in Bal Harbour. She also worked on projects for hotelier Stephen Muss at the Fontainebleau, the Eden Roc and the Idies House (now Hawks Cay Resort) in the Florida Keys. Glaubman’s art graced the programs for the opening of Gusman Hall with the Miami Philharmonic and impresario Judy Drucker tapped Glaubman for pieces that appeared on the Concert Association’s playbills. Glaubman produced exquisite portraits of the featured artists including Leonard Bernstein, Jean-Pierre Rampal, jazz great BB King, Luciano Pavarotti and countless others.
