Elegance of the American Iris: Botanical Illustrations by Thomas Meehan, 1879
About the Item
This original antique artwork for sale reflects the meticulous work of Thomas Meehan, and the images were published by L.Prang and Company in Boston, known for their exquisite chromolithographic work in the 19th century. The book from which these plates come, "The Native Flowers and Ferns of the United States in Their Botanical, Horticultural, and Popular Aspects," serves as a testament to the rich botanical heritage of the United States and the period's appreciation for natural sciences.
The two botanical prints depict:
The first image depicts "Saxifraga Virginiensis," commonly known as the Early Saxifrage or Virginia Saxifrage. This plant is characterized by a basal rosette of spoon-shaped leaves, from which emerge one or more leafless flower stalks bearing clusters of small, five-petaled white flowers.
The second image illustrates "Cassandra Calyculata," known as Leatherleaf. It is a low-growing evergreen shrub that produces bell-shaped white flowers arranged in a one-sided raceme, and its leaves are oblong, leathery, and have a distinctive reddish tinge on the underside.
Both illustrations are exemplary of botanical art, aiming to provide accurate representations of plant species for identification and study. They highlight the distinctive features of each plant, showcasing their natural beauty and contributing to the scientific and horticultural knowledge of the time.
