English Hand Colored Lithograph by Wm Heath A Sketch of the Row in Parliment St.

About the Item

Titled " A Sketch of the Row in Parliment Street," this hand colored print was published in London by Thomas McLean, circa approximately 1830. Drawn by William Heath (1795 to 1840), his pseudonym ‘Paul Pry'. . "William Heath was a caricaturist and illustrator and was predominately occupied with the illustration of books, mostly on military themes. However, with the decline in demand for such publications in the 1820s Heath began to once again produce satirical caricatures, a talent for which he acquired in his youth, publishing his first satirical prints in 1809 at the age of only fourteen. Heath brilliantly satirized contemporary British political figures, utilizing extreme satire to characterize how little each opposing group understands each other." In an older frame, the sight line is 12 inches wide x 8.75 tall.

Antique print titled 'Run Neighbours Run - St Al_ns is Quadrilling It'. In this print, the Duchess of St Albans dances a quadrille (a dance performed by four couples) with an unidentified naval officer, whose dancing steps resemble those of the hornpipe, a dance popular among sailors. The other three couples of the quadrille stand around them, looking on. All of the figures are fashionably dressed, with the Duchess' clothing being particularly extravagant. Harriot Mellon, Duchess of St Albans, was a former actress who married the elderly banker Thomas Coutts in 1815. After Coutts' death, she remarried to the Duke of St Albans in 1827, causing a scandal due to his being 23 years younger than she. Mellon, the richest woman in Britain after her husband's death, was a philathropist and patron of the arts, but was a controversial figure in fashionable society due to her humble origins. Satirical prints...
