Engraving of Sandwich in Kent, One of the Cinque Ports in the UK, 1841

About the Item

An engraving titled "Sandwich" by the British artist William Henry Bartlett, engraved by E. Challis in 1841. It depicts a view of the town of Sandwich in Kent, which is one of the Cinque Ports in the United Kingdom. Bartlett was known for his detailed and picturesque illustrations of topography, many of which were rendered into steel engravings. William Henry Bartlett was an accomplished artist and illustrator, born in Kentish Town, London in 1809. He is recognized for his contributions to the illustration of topography and for his extensive travels, which allowed him to capture a variety of landscapes and urban scenes. Throughout his career, he visited many places, including Britain, the Balkans, the Middle East, and North America, producing a substantial body of work that was highly regarded for its attention to detail and composition. Bartlett’s work, including this engraving of Sandwich, was characterized by his ability to capture the essence of the scenes before him, often including elements of the past such as ruins, churches, abbeys, cathedrals, and castles. His engravings were published in various travel books and were widely copied by other artists. Unfortunately, Bartlett died in 1854 from fever aboard a French ship off the coast of Malta. This particular image would likely appeal to those interested in British history, architecture, and landscape art from the 19th century. The detailed rendering of Sandwich with its historic bridge and architecture, under the careful hand of Bartlett, makes it a valuable piece for collectors and enthusiasts of historical engravings.
