About the Item

This stonecut and stencil print is #22/50 from the West Baffin Eskimo Co-Operative's Annual Collection of 1986. It is signed at the top left in syllabics by the artist and the Inuit print-maker, and it has the red igloo logo of the Cape Dorset, West Baffin Eskimo Co-Operative for authenticity. Along the bottom, written in pencil by a Co-Operative staff calligrapher, is "Feeding the Young, Stonecut and Stencil, 22/50, Cape Dorset 1986, Kingmeata." Kingmeata Etidlooie (1915-1989), a self-taught artist, was famous for her color-field style of painting and was an innovator in this technique, being one of the first to use water colors and acrylic paints instead of pencils, crayons or felt-tip pens. She lived in an igloo and tent until her 50's, but moved to the settlement of permanent houses in Cape Dorset, Baffin Island in the 1960's where she joined the new art studio at the Co-Operative and began her career as an artist. She was one of the most successful artists of her generation. She liked to paint birds especially, and animals, but also painted landscapes, the spirit world, and genre scenes. The Co-Operative published over fifty of her limited edition prints from 1974 to 1989. Her prints are in many permanent international collections, including Canada and the United States, such as Museum of Fine Art in Montreal, Art Gallery of Ontario, and Anchorage Museum of History. During her lifetime she participated in over thirty-five international exhibits in Canada, the United States, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, France and Japan. "Feeding the Young" shows Kingmeata's observation of Nature on Baffin Island, her motherly instincts, as well as the Inuit mastery of survival in a harsh climate. The saturated colors and crisp lines and the warm emotions are characteristic of her art. The print is newly framed in black wood, float-mounted on a non-acidic mat, and is under museum-quality, non-glare, color-true, UV-blocking glass. The print size is 27.75" x 21.38"; the overall framed size is listed above. The shadows in some of the photographs are caused by the closeness of the camera. They are not blemishes, just shadows. The print is in excellent condition.
