About the Item
Etching and aquatint by the acclaimed Italian sculptor, Giacomo Manzù (1908-1991).
Remembered primarily for his revival of the ancient Italian tradition of crafting sculptural bronze doors for revered municipal and religious buildings in Rome, his most notable work was a commission from the Catholic Church for the entrance to St Peters Basilica in Vatican City.
This is an example of his sculptural eye adapting to the flat surface. In this work, Homage to Picasso (1973), his gestural penmanship jumps from the white ground to depict a couple's embrace. Despite their closeness neither figure looks to each other. Instead focussing on something in the distance out of frame. What seems a romantic coupling is disturbed by the unknown.
Displaying his familiarity with Hellenistic frieze technique, the russet ground covering the top third of the image is artfully used to add further detail to the hair.
