Hand Colored Antique Print of Deer, Billy Goats and Goats, circa 1820

About the Item

Original antique print of deer and (billy) goats. This engraved print originates from a very rare unknown Dutch work. The plates are similar to the plates in the famous German work: ‘Bilderbuch fur Kinder' by F.J. Bertuch, published 1790-1830 in Weimar. This could be Dutch edition of this work (no references found), or a work that used the Bertuch plates. Published circa 1820. The engraving in more details described: A variety of animals in an illustrative manner reminiscent of old natural history books. The illustrations are detailed, with an attempt to portray the animals in a realistic way, yet they bear the hallmarks of an era without photographic reference, which often led to a mix of accurate and imaginative elements. On the top left, there is a depiction of a deer with a spotted coat, likely intended to be a fawn. Next to it, on the top right, stands a larger deer with a robust body and a set of impressive antlers, indicating it might be a mature stag. Below these, we see two goat-like animals. The one on the left has a shaggy coat, possibly a representation of a domestic goat. On the right, there is another goat with pronounced horns, which might be an attempt to illustrate a wild species, such as an ibex. The bottom row features two more animals, a small goat or sheep with a long coat on the left, and on the right, another goat with distinctive markings, which could be an interpretation of a specific breed or a young goat. The text in the image again provides a classification or name according to the system in use at the time of the book's publication. Such images served both scientific and educational purposes, though the accuracy varied widely based on the artist's knowledge and the quality of descriptions available to them.
