Hand-Colored Antique Print of Different Species of Bats, Published around 1820

About the Item

Original antique print of various bats. This engraved print originates from a very rare unknown Dutch work. The plates are similar to the plates in the famous German work: ‘Bilderbuch fur Kinder' by F.J. Bertuch, published 1790-1830 in Weimar. This could be Dutch edition of this work (no references found), or a work that used the Bertuch plates. Published circa 1820. This image is from the vintage series, labeled "Viverr. Dieren XVIII" and "Quadrup. XVIII," indicating it is the eighteenth in a series on viverrids and quadrupeds. The engravings on this page depict different species of bats, showcasing their wing structures and distinctive features: 1. The centerpiece of the image is a bat in flight, with its wings fully extended, showing the detailed membrane structure of the wings. 2. To the top left, there is a bat depicted in a landing or ready-to-take-off pose, with its wings partially folded. 3. On the top right, there is a bat shown resting, with its wings wrapped around its body, a common pose for bats when they are sleeping or at rest. 4. Directly below the central image, another bat is shown with large ears, indicating it might be a species that relies heavily on echolocation. 5. On the bottom left, we see a bat with its wings partially extended, possibly preparing for flight or just landed. 6. Finally, on the bottom right, there's another bat in a resting position, similar to number 3, but with a slightly different posture and wing folding. Each bat is individually numbered, and the engravings are made with the same attention to detail as the previous illustrations, suggesting that they were part of an educational series meant to document and describe the characteristics of various animal species. The positions of the bats provide viewers with a good sense of how these creatures move and rest.
