About the Item

Antique Print of Soldierfish and Bluefin Seabream – Paris, 1846 This finely hand-colored lithograph features two distinctive reef fish species: Myripristis leognathus (known as the Soldierfish) and Chrysophrys cyanopteron (known as the Bluefin Seabream). The illustration originates from the 1846 Paris publication of Voyage de la frégate La Vénus, a major French scientific expedition around the globe conducted between 1836 and 1839. The upper fish, Myripristis leognathus, is small and vividly colored with red and yellow tones, large eyes, and pronounced scales. Soldierfish are known for their nocturnal behavior and are commonly found hiding in coral crevices during the day. Their intense coloration and alert posture make them a popular subject in both scientific illustration and marine art. The lower fish, Chrysophrys cyanopteron, or Bluefin Seabream, is depicted with a more subdued golden body, accented by cool blue fins and a thick body structure. This species belongs to the Sparidae family and is typically found in tropical and subtropical reefs. Its commercial and ecological importance made it of interest to 19th-century zoologists. Two small inset diagrams on either side of the image show the detailed structure of the species' teeth, labeled 2A and 2B, emphasizing the plate’s function as a scientific reference. This lithograph, labeled “Poissons Pl. 4”, was drawn by Werner, engraved by Hénard, and printed by Bougeard. The exceptional attention to anatomical accuracy and the quality of the coloring are hallmarks of French natural history illustrations from this period. The *Voyage de la Vénus* stands among the most ambitious 19th-century French scientific expeditions, and its zoological illustrations—especially marine plates like this one—remain highly desirable among collectors of antique prints and natural history art. Condition: Very good condition. Minor foxing in the margins and light toning consistent with age. Clean plate impression with fresh coloring and no tears or repairs. Framing tips: A warm wood or black frame with a soft ivory or taupe mat would highlight the natural tones of this print. Ideal for marine-themed decor, libraries, or natural history collections. Museum-grade glazing is recommended to preserve the delicate hand coloring.
