John Gould was the most prolific ornithological artist of the 19th century. Born a gardener's son, he was raised on the royal estate at Windsor. He became the gardener at Ripley Castle, where he learned the art of taxidermy, which would be so useful in his future career. In 1927 he was appointed taxidermist of the new Zoological Society of London, and married Elizabeth Coxen. She soon became an invaluable aide, a gifted artist and an expert in transferring their drawings to lithographic stone.
Unable to find a publisher at first, Gould resolved to publish his works himself. Illustrating over 3000 birds and animals in over 40 volumes, his works became very successful and he realized quite a fortune. But even the most industrious artist/craftsman could not do this alone. In addition to his artistic and scientific accomplishments, Gould was a sound businessman. He hired-and inspired-the best illustrators of the day to record the specimens that came from around the world.
Gould's pride in Birds of Great Britain was matched by its public success. The list of 468 subscribers included the nobility and scientific luminaries of Europe and America. Nor has it reputation dimmed. The illustrations to Birds of Great Britain are considered Gould's high water mark in publishing. The coloring is richer with a rounder style. Gould's special haunt for observing these birds was on the banks of the river Thames, at Taplow, Cliveden and Cookhem. He would travel twenty-five miles from London by train and spend many hours engrossed in his sketching. As this was not far from his boyhood home, it seems fitting that it was his last fully-completed work and his happiest and most satisfying achievement.
