Antique Indian tin lithograph advertising sign for Manuel Albertola, Saffron Exporter of India, advertisement features two reserves titled "Gathering the Flowers of Saffron" and "Separating the Saffron of the Flowers" bordered by various tins of spice offered by the company, circa 1920 Measures: 22.5" H x 38.25" L x .25" D from wall Additional information: Manuel Alberola Manuel Alberola Sellés. 1878-1932. Saffron exporter. 1st Mayor of the City Council of Novelda during the Second Republic. Son of Manuel Alberola Valero and Mari Pepa Sellés Seller. He was born in Seville, where the family lived for commercial reasons. He moved very young to Novelda, hometown of his parents, where all his brothers and sisters were born, Remedios, Amparo, Josefa, Encarnación, Vicente and Antonio. He attended primary studies there and soon he was in charge of the business of sale of saffron. At the age of 18, "Manolico", who was known to all, is sent by his father to sell the saffron to the merchants, traveling through the villages. In this early experience, his daughter Manolita, who "astonished" his parents for the high profit he got in his sales, confirmed his commercial gift because he not only managed to double the benefit that his father had entrusted him, but also also with the money he got he bought a horse with which he returned home, surprising everyone for his expertise. Married to Maria Dolores Beltrá Abad at the end of the 19th century, he had four daughters: María Dolores (María), Amparo, Manolita and Gloria. In the early 20th century, he began his business relationship in India, especially with a family in Bombay with which he also creates great bonds of friendship that lead them to treat themselves as a family, these were Mr. Narayan, his son Mr. Kashinat Narayan and later his grandson Mr. Manghest Kashinat with whom the descendants of Manuel Alberola Sellés corresponded until 1980. This family belonged to the Parsi caste. Manuel Alberola Sellés, marketed saffron for various markets: Spain, China, India and Japan and Russia. In 1912 he was leader of the Republican Party of his city, in which he founded the Republican Circle. Imprisoned in Alicante in the late 1930s, he was released in January 1931 and elected mayor of his city in April of that year, when the Second Republic was proclaimed. He was the promoter of the project to bring irrigation water from Villena wells, which he financed with his own capital. Later these waters passed without any profit to the irrigators of the zone. During his brief term he promoted the construction of the Market of Supplies, the school endowments and the extension of the cemetery (with land donated from his property). He died unexpectedly on December 11, 1932, when he was only 54 years old.
