About the Item
Stencil print (pochoir) in colors, 1934. From the only edition issued for a special issue of the periodical 'D'Aci i D'Alla', Barcelona December 1934. Published by Pochoir Publicity Art J. Mateu, Barcelona 1934. Note: The only edition; there was no signed separate edition Ref: Dupin - Miro Engraver no 13.
Extremely fine strong impression with excellent unrubbed colors. On smooth cream wove paper. Excellent condition, especially for a stencil-print of this type. Previously kept in the original wrappers. The very faintest suggestion of time mottling. Full margins. Sheet: 13 x 10 3/4ins. (330x275mm).
'Personnages devant la Mer' is one of three important compositions which Miro made in the medium of stencil-cut pochoir in 1934 which show his art at the height of the Surrealist era. Part of their importance lies in the way that they show how he was seeking to use print techniques to extend the effects which he created through his collages and 'assemblages' of the same period. He was interested by the way that in using the clear outlines which result from the stencil shapes and the dense mat but luminous inks which are possible in pochoir he could create the sense of ambiguity of surface and spatial plane, as well as the uncertainty of the world of hallucination, which are central to this period of his surrealism. The composition above was drawn, the stencils cut and the edition printed at the pochoir studio of J. Mateu in Barcelona. The only edition of the print (no separate proofs or pencil signed impressions are recorded) was issued in Barcelona a special edition of the publication 'D'Aci I d'Alla' devoted to a review of contemporary art. Although originally quite a large edition a very large part of the issue has been lost and impressions of the print are very scarce nowadays.
