About the Item

This stonecut and stencil limited edition print (8/50) is #29 of the 1981 Annual Collection of the West Baffin Eskimo Cooperative art studio in Cape Dorset (now Kinngait), Nunavut, Canada. During her lifetime, Kingmeata Etidlooie (1915-1989) was one of the most prolific and respected artists featured in the annual Cape Dorset catalogs. She was active between the late 1960's--when she transitioned from living in an igloo and tent to living at the permanent settlement of Cape Dorset--until her death in 1989. She became successful as a pioneer who progressed from pencil drawing to painting with watercolors and then acrylics. She lived comfortably on the income from her art thanks to her international following. She was amazed that images on paper could be sold for money. Kingmeata is noted for her color-field style and her attention to detail, as seen in this work with its touches of saturated color and the intricacy of the fur and sealskin clothing. The subject of this print is the happiness of her son in the snow. She signed it in syllabics with a pencil. In the plate is the syllabics signature of the print-maker above the red igloo mark of the West Baffin Eskimo Cooperative, the indication of authenticity. Along the bottom of the image a Cooperative staff member wrote in pencil, in English, the title, method, edition number, location and date. Kingmeata Etidlooie's works are in many international public and private collections and in museums throughout Canada and the United States. The actual size of the print is 32" x 24", while the framed dimensions are listed below. The new frame is wooden and the print is floated on archival mounting under museum-quality, non-glare, UV-blocking glass. The print is clean and the paper is white; the darker areas in the photos are caused by camera reflections and shadows. Wear consistent with age and use. Naturally occurring thread-like inclusion in the thin French art paper as seen above the subject's left hand, and minor wrinkling typical for the paper's age and delicacy. These are inconsequential issues.
