About the Item
Hand-Colored Portrait of a Lady-in-Waiting to the Dauphine of Auvergne, Reign of Charles V, ca. 1370 (after 1827, ca. 1900 edition)
Graceful hand-colored engraving depicting a lady-in-waiting (suivante) to the Dauphine d’Auvergne during the reign of Charles V of France (1364–1380), around 1370. She is shown in a striking heraldic gown designed with panels of white, red, and deep blue, embellished with a motif of green doves, referencing the heraldry of the Auvergne lineage.
The figure wears a close-fitting headdress with side rolls framing her face, a typical late 14th-century style that emphasized dignity and elegance. The long, flowing gown, with its vertical tricolor pattern and symbolic birds, represents both courtly refinement and dynastic identity. The use of heraldic devices in female dress during this period was a visible assertion of noble loyalty and prestige within the royal court.
The print is from the celebrated series Galerie Française de Femmes Célèbres (Paris, 1827), designed by Louis-Marie Lanté and engraved by Georges Jacques Gatine, though this example comes from the ca. 1900 reprint of the original plates. These later impressions, carefully hand-colored, preserved the historic costume studies for collectors and historians.
Condition report: Very good, with clean margins and only the lightest toning near the edges. Rich and careful coloring with the heraldic blues and reds particularly well preserved. Blank verso.
Framing tips: This portrait pairs beautifully with other heraldic or royal costume prints from the same series. A black or gilt frame with an ivory mount will highlight the crisp lines, while a red or blue secondary mat can bring out the heraldic colors of the gown.
Technique: Hand-colored engraving (later impression, ca. 1900)
Maker: After Louis-Marie Lanté (artist) and Georges Jacques Gatine (engraver), Paris, 1827
