Lonnie C Blackley Jr Signed Red Barn Farmhouse Landscape Lithograph Print 23"

About the Item

A beautiful hand colored lithograph print by Lonnie C. Blackley, Jr, showing a large, red, dilapidated barn and silo in a country farmhouse landscape Pencil signed and numbered 17/25 in lower left. Rustic wood frame, black, red, and white triple mat. "Lonnie was born in Spartanburg, S. C. His earliest childhood years were spent on a farm playing in fields, creeks and old barns. His love of nature and buildings is transferred to his art. Lonnie's talent is a natural gift. At the age of 5 he found a drawing of a car that his uncle had done and he drew it. His uncle saw it but could not believe that Lonnie had drawn it, so had him draw it again. He has been drawing ever since. He continued developing his talent in high school, the Ohio Visual Arts Institute and the Cincinnati Art Academy. Lonnie enjoyed working with Pen and Ink and also Pastels so combined the two mediums and developed it into the combination that he does today. Pen and Ink is very time consuming especially with the amount of detail that Lonnie puts into his artwork. One piece can take anywhere from 3 weeks to a couple of months. Before the pastel color is applied to a piece, if it is decided that hand-painted lithographs are going to be done, lithographs are done of the ink work and then Lonnie adds the pastel color to each lithograph individually. Once pastel color is applied, full color lithographs(prints) can be done. All originals are done on 4 ply, 100% ragboard." In the early 1900's he studied at the Art Institute of Chicago where by 1908 he became an instructor and was awarded the Institute's highest honor, the John Quincy Adams Traveling Scholarship. For the next four years Makielski studied in Paris and its environs. He was enrolled in the Academie Julian and the Grand Chaumiere both in Paris. He exhibited in the Paris Salons of 1910 and 1911 and spent much of his time painting the countryside around Paris, especially Giverny and Versailles. "Undins's Pool", "Luxembourg Palace" and "Wildflowers, Giverny" are wonderful examples of his work during this period. William Gerdts cites Makielski in Monet's Giverny: "An Impressionist Colony" (Abbeville Press, 1993) as one of the most traditional of the second generation colonists who followed the lead of Theodore Robinson and other first generation Americans at Giverny. Makielski's training might have been earlier influenced by the Hoosier Impressionists active in Chicago during his training there, but the European experience clearly brought forth a style of its own. Makielski returned to South Bend in...
