About the Item
Contemporary artist Melissa Strawser’s Bertoia Junior Dandelion Gong Print is a pulled Artist Proof, an original intaglio print using handmade Doug Zucco White Crow Printmaking Paper (Fleetwood, PA) with colored inks from a single bronze plate that just happens to be a singing Bertoia Gong by Val Bertoia. The etching was inspired by her 20 year working relationship with Val Bertoia (Junior) and Bertoia Studio and strengthened her desire to crossover printmaking and sculpture. When Val asked her to etch a drawing onto his formed Bronze Gong she automatically drew from the center outward. A philosophy often used while working with metals and apropos for Bertoia. Her version of a Dandelion Puff seeded and emerged. The etched bronze is sensitized for her creative versions of Bertoia symbols. 4 Artist Proof prints have been pulled and all inked differently, this one is A/P 3 of 4. Melissa’s artwork is that of a 5th generation artist inspired by ‘everyday as art’ coming from a steep background and tradition of Pennsylvania Folk Art within her family. This piece ships directly from the artist’s studio.
Melissa Strawser has a MA Printmaking from The Slade School of Art, University College London and Magna Cum Laude BFA from William Paterson University where she mentored with Dr. David Shapiro (NYC). She has been awarded a print residency in Evora, Portugal and worked with her late Slade Professor and Printmaker, Bartolomeu Cid Dos Santos in his Tavira Print Workshop in Portugal for 7 years. She studied with Stanley Jones of Curwen Press, and worked with Robert Blackburn (NYC) and Dan Welden (Sag Harbor, NY), and Bill Ritchie (Seattle, WA). Melissa’s artwork has been exhibited in the US, Germany and Portugal. She is represented by Hartmut Berlinicke at Galeria Wildeshausen near Bremen and has print works in the Strang Print Room Collection in London and the Chemistry Department at UCL. Her print work most recently was included in Hartmut Berlinicke’s Collection for an established Graphic Museum in Germany. Her artist's workshop is currently located in Bertoia Studio in Bally, PA.
