Original Color Linocut by Werner Büttner "Nachleben" in Yellow and Black

About the Item

Original color linocut by Werner Büttner "Nachleben" in yellow and black. Printed on laid paper and signed and dated in pencil on the right. The paper has some compressions and slight creases, otherwise the condition is good. Shortly before the Wall was built in 1961, Büttner moved with his parents from the GDR to Munich. Moved to Berlin in 1968 and studied law at the Freie Universität Berlin from 1973 to 1977. After his studies he worked as a social worker in the Tegel prison. He was a co-founder of several humorously titled organizations such as the "Dum-Dum-Liga-Journal", setting up a seed bank for GDR refugees. In 1976, together with Albert Oehlen, he founded the League to Combat Contradictory Behavior. In the 1980s, together with the brothers Albert and Markus Oehlen and Martin Kippenberger, he was counted among the so-called "newcomers" or "young wild ones" in painting, who turned away from conceptual art and propagated a "return of painting". At that time his painting was neo-expressionist to neo-Dadaist, with sometimes humorous and sarcastic allusions to everyday life in titles and subjects. In the media, such as the magazine Twen, which introduced and interviewed the “Neue Wilde” in May 1982, Büttner, like other young wild ones, drew attention to himself with social criticism, ironically provocative statements, rebellious poses and verbal taboo breaks: “I just want a warm place from where I can shoot people for a good cause." or "The elimination of wrong thoughts is just as much an act of artistic intoxication as the elimination of garbage in museums and apartments", "The eye on the small and the big ones on the eye,” said Büttner in 1982. A manifesto by him together with Oehlen and Georg Herold is entitled Fucking Skilled Workers. Since the 1980s, Werner Büttner has been a lecturer and from 1989 to 2021 a professor at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg, where he taught painting and was also involved internally in university politics
