About the Item

Pavillon de la Grande Tuilerie – French Architectural Lithograph, La Brique This striking antique architectural lithograph shows the pavilion of the Grande Tuilerie de Bourgogne (Montchanin) designed for the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris. Drawn and produced for the celebrated architectural series La Brique et la Terre Cuite by Pierre Chabat, the plate highlights the expressive potential of polychrome brick and terracotta in 19th-century French design. The detailed elevation and sectional drawings reveal the vibrant interplay of geometric patterns, arched doorways, tiled rooftops, and ornate wrought-iron elements. Particularly notable is the richly ornamented facade featuring green and pink glazed bricks, intricate cornices, and carefully shaded architectural reliefs – characteristic of the exuberant historicist styles of the period. The pavilion, originally erected to promote the skill and production of the Bourgogne tileworks, stands as a testament to industrial-era pride in craft and material. This print would appeal to collectors of architectural history, Art Nouveau design, or those with an interest in the decorative arts of the Belle Époque. It is both a beautiful design object and a valuable visual document of a key moment in France’s architectural heritage. Condition: Very good condition overall with only faint age-related toning. No holes or tears. Framing tips: Pair with a neutral ivory or light stone mount and a mid-tone wooden frame to enhance the earthy hues of the brickwork. A simple gilt or ebonized frame would also suit classical interiors. Overall size: 32 x 45 cm. Image size: 25 x 35 cm.
