About the Item

Pavillon Tuilerie – French Architectural Lithograph from La Brique, Exposition 1889 This richly detailed architectural lithograph presents the front elevation of the Pavillon de la Grande Tuilerie de Bourgogne (Montchanin), designed by architects Wulliam and Farge for the Exposition Universelle of 1889. Issued around 1900 as part of the renowned series La Brique et la Terre Cuite by Pierre Chabat, the print showcases the expressive possibilities of brick and ceramic ornament in French architecture at the turn of the century. The pavilion is rendered in precise line and color lithography, emphasizing its vivid polychrome façade, scalloped roof tiles, and terracotta ornamentation. The domed roof structure, pierced by a central turret, is especially striking, and the archway is bordered with intricate brickwork and floral ceramic panels. Figures flanking the gate provide a sense of scale to the composition, enhancing the architectural drama. The piece captures the spirit of the Belle Époque, when French industrial and artistic innovation converged in ambitious architectural presentations for world fairs. The use of vibrant glazed tiles and ornamental brick reveals both the technical mastery of the Montchanin tileworks and the stylistic imagination of the period. Collectors of architectural prints, French industrial art, or lovers of the decorative arts will find this work a compelling example of period design and craftsmanship. Condition: Very good, with light age toning only. No holes or tears, strong paper. Image clean and well-preserved. Framing tips: Best presented in a warm-toned wooden or walnut frame with a soft ivory or natural mat to complement the earthy red and green tones of the brickwork. Alternatively, a minimal black frame can add a modern contrast. Overall size: 32 x 45 cm. Image size: 23 x 34 cm.
