About the Item
Print depicting plate No. 20 from engraving on steel plate and taken from the Illustrated Atlas published by F.A. Brockhaus, in Leipzig 1869-1875 the iconographic encyclopedia of the sciences and arts. This is a printing pertaining to to shipbuilding and depicting seven views on one sheet: plan of the city of Wilhalmshaven, the Suez Canal and its dimensions, working boats, and the port of Marseille with the city in the background. Glossary with explanation of the views depicted in German. Leipzig ca. 1870.
Good condition, some staining to edges, walnut frame not contemporary.
Measures 36.5x19 cm - inches 14.4x7.5.
The publishing house was founded in Amsterdam in 1805 by Friedrich Arnold Brockhaus (1772-1823), a German publisher after whom the famous Brockhaus encyclopedia is named. In 1811 Brockhaus moved his company to Altenburg, and in the 1818 he had his own printing press built in Leipzig. The publishing house also owned a publishing bookstore, and an antiquarian bookstore. The paternal business was continued by sons Friedrich and Heinrich, who were followed by grandchildren and various descendants. In 1943 the Leipzig headquarters was completely destroyed by bombing, and the new headquarters was moved to Wiesbaden in 1945.
