Concert flyer: 4.5 x 5.5 inches Very good overall vintage condition. About: The Beastie Boys: Beastie Boys, American hip-hop group, the first white rap performers to gain a substantial following. As such, they were largely responsible for the growth of rap’s mainstream audience. The principal members were MCA (byname of Adam Yauch; b. August 5, 1964, Brooklyn, New York, U.S.—d. May 4, 2012, New York City), Mike D (byname of Michael Diamond; b. November 20, 1965, New York City), and Adrock (byname of Adam Horovitz; b. October 31, 1966, South Orange, New Jersey). Founded in New York City in 1981 by a group of arty middle-class Jewish kids responding to Manhattan’s eclectic downtown music scene, the Beastie Boys evolved by 1983 from a hard-core punk quartet (including original guitarist John Berry and drummer Kate Schellenbach) into a trio—MCA, Mike D, and Adrock. They signed with Def Jam, and early 12-inch singles and a brief tour with Madonna in 1985 finally brought them press attention. It was not until they toured with popular black rappers Run-D.M.C., however, that the Beastie Boys won credibility with the rap audience. Good timing and a clever blend of hard rock samples and parodic fraternity-boy posturing turned Licensed to Ill (1986), with its hit single “(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party),” into a smash debut album, confirming the emotional and stylistic affinities some critics found between rap and hard rock. After moving from Def Jam to Capitol Records for their 1989 release, Paul’s Boutique, the Beastie Boys strategically appropriated retro-funk influences, adding an acoustic dimension to digital sound-collage techniques learned from Rick Rubin and Grandmaster Flash. The Ramones: Onstage, they were the personification of unity – even family. The four men dressed the same –in leather motorcycle jackets, weathered jeans, sneakers – had the same dark hair color, shared the same last name. They seemed to think the same thoughts and breathe the same energy. They often didn’t stop between songs, not even as bassist Dee Dee Ramone barked out the mad “1-2-3- 4” time signature that dictated the tempo for their next number. Guitarist Johnny Ramone and drummer Tommy Ramone would slam into breakneck unison with a power that could make audience members lean back, as if they’d been slammed in the chest. Johnny and Dee Dee played with legs astride, looking unconquerable. Between them stood lead singer Joey Ramone – gangly, with dark glasses and a hair mess that fell over his eyes, protecting him from a world that had too often been unkind – proclaiming the band’s hilarious, disturbing tales of misplacement and heartbreak. There was a pleasure and spirit, a palpable commonality, in what the Ramones were doing onstage together.

Jane's Addiction at The World Halloween weekend 1988: Rare vintage original announcement flyer produced on the occasion of a historic 1988 Halloween weekend concert featuring Jane's Addiction; The World 254 East 2nd street New York, New York. Concert flyer: 9.5 x 6.5 inches Very good overall vintage condition. About: Jane's Addiction: Jane's Addiction is an American rock band from Los Angeles, California, formed in 1985. The band consists of vocalist Perry Farrell, guitarist Dave Navarro, drummer Stephen Perkins and bassist Chris Chaney. The band has been credited for inspiring the alternative rock movement of the 1990s. They have released four studio albums, including their breakthrough album Nothing's Shocking in 1988 and Ritual de lo Habitual in 1990. The band was formed in Los Angeles, California in 1985. Founder and singer Perry Farrell found bassist Eric Avery, who then brought on drummer Stephen Perkins and finally guitarist Dave Navarro, after auditioning many players. Jane’s Addiction became a sensation on the Los Angeles club scene and a staple on the Sunset Strip. The band’s original line-up featured Perry Farrell (vocals), Dave Navarro (guitar), Eric Avery (bass) and Stephen Perkins (drums). Jane’s Addiction was one of the first bands to emerge from the early 1990s alternative rock movement to gain mainstream media attention and commercial success in the United States. They recorded Nothing’s Shocking in 1988 (so they are celebrating 25-years in 2013!) and Ritual De Lo Habitual in 1990, both on Warner Brothers Records. Jane’s Addiction broke up in 1991 and their farewell tour coincided with Farrell founding the first Lollapalooza festival, an alternative rock showcase and lifestyle festival that is still to this day one of the most influential music festivals in the world. As a result, Jane’s Addiction became icons of what is dubbed the “Alternative Nation.” In 1997 Jane’s Addiction united briefly with Red Hot Chili Pepper’s Flea filling in on bass. Then in 2001 the band reconnected with Chris Chaney on bass and released the album Strays, produced by legendary producer Bob Ezrin. “Superhero” from this album became the theme song for HBO’s hit show Entourage. Farrell, Navarro, Perkins and Chaney returned in to release their fourth studio album, The Great Escape Artist, and toured the world. Jane’s Addiction is regarded as one of the most influential acts in alternative music. Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine...

  • Martin Lewis Signed Limited Ed. Etchng Street Booth, Tokyo New Years Eve, 1927
    By Martin Lewis
    Located in Studio City, CA
A beautiful and exceedingly engaging limited edition etching/print titled "Street Booth, Tokyo New Years Eve" by famed Australian/American painter/artist/master printmaker Martin Lewis (1881-1962). This image was created in 1927. Lewis was born in Castlemaine, Victoria, Australia in 1881 but migrated to the United States in 1900. After working in San Francisco and New York he then traveled to Japan to study Japanese art for two years. Lewis eventually returned to the US and settled back in New York in the early 1920s where he would experience his most artistically productive breakthrough period (between 1925-1935) in which he would create some of his most well-known works including this piece. Today, Lewis is universally considered to be one of the most important American printmakers of the twentieth century - a master of light and shadow. This work is a drypoint etching, printed in black ink on cream wove paper with full margins. A brilliant, luminous, and richly-inked impression. From a noted (McCarron, Paul. The Prints of Martin Lewis: A Catalogue Raisonne, p. 60) edition of 40 recorded impressions. According to McCarron, this is the most accomplished of Lewis' Japan prints: "New Year''s Day is an important holiday in Japan. The Japanese traditionally decorate their streets and homes with shimenawa, knotted straw ropes blessed and purified by Shinto priests...

  • Clash at Rijmenam Engraved: A Turning Point in the Eighty Years' War, 1632
    Located in Langweer, NL
Rare engraving depicting a battle in the Eighty Year' War. The Battle of Rijmenam took place on July 31, 1578, during the early stages of the Eighty Years' War. It was a conflict between the States-General of the Netherlands and the Spanish governor-general, resulting in a Spanish defeat. The forces of the States-General set up camp at Rijmenam under the overall leadership of the Count of Boussu. Their army consisted of 12,000 infantry and 7,000 cavalry. The English mercenaries were led by Sir John Norris and Sir Richard Bingham, the Scottish mercenaries by Robert Stuart, and the French Huguenots by François de la Noue. Don Juan of Austria, the Spanish commander, commanded an army of 12,000 infantry and 5,000 cavalry. He planned to attack before reinforcements from Zutphen could arrive. His subordinates, Alexander Farnese and Gabrio Serbelloni, considered this too risky, but Don Juan proceeded with his plan and launched an early morning attack on July 31. He attempted to draw Boussu out for an open field battle, but Boussu stayed behind the dug trenches. After three hours of waiting, Don Juan ordered a company of musketeers under Alonso de Leyva and three groups of cuirassiers under the Marquis del Monte to stage a feigned attack on the village's rear. In response, Boussu sent Norris to confront them. Following the initial skirmish, Scottish forces under Stuart and Spanish infantry under Fernando Álvarez de Toledo...
