Circa 1879 hand colored engraving titled “Afternoon in the King’s Road” by Randolph Caldecott, showing a throng of people in winter clothing walking along the pier next to the main thoroughfares of the seaside town of Brighton. Published in The Graphic, a weekly illustrated paper. “Randolph Caldecott was an English artist and illustrator who was born in Chester, England in 1846. He is best known for his book illustrations which he greatly influenced during the 19th century. Two books illustrated by him, priced at a shilling each, were published every Christmas for eight years. The Caldecott Medal which was named in his honour is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.
