Born in Borisoglebsk, Russia in 1899, Raphael Soyer is identified as a Social Realist. Soyer moved to the Lower East Side of New York City in 1913, after his family was deported from Russia by the Tsarist regime. Soyer left school at sixteen to help support the family. He attended free classes at Cooper Union and at the National Academy of Design. Guy Pene du Bois, a teacher at the Art Students League, recognized his talent and introduced him to Charles Daniel, who gave him his first solo exhibition in 1929. The success of this event secured his position as a professional artist.
Common themes were intimate studies of solitary women, often nudes, and portraits of fellow artists, reflecting his great affection and admiration for them.
Both of Soyer's brothers, Moses and Isaac, were also artists. With his identical twin Moses, he painted murals for the post office in Kingessing, Pennsylvania. He also taught at the Art
Students League.
The Depression's economic difficulties could be seen in his subjects, and unemployed men caught Soyer's eye. Women at work became a theme with Soyer after 1940. He died in New York in 1987.

- Raphel Soyer Dancers Signed Vintage Modern Figurative Lithograph on Paper 1954By Raphael SoyerLocated in Keego Harbor, MIA pensive lithograph on paper titled “Dancers” by American artist Raphael Soyer. Hand signed in pencil on the bottom right. Published by Associated American Artists, New York in 1954. Raphael Soyer (1899-1987) was a painter, draughtsman, and printmaker who believed that art is to survive, it must describe and express people, their lives and times. It must communicate. From an early age Soyer and his brothers Moses and Isaac were encouraged to draw by their father, a teacher of Hebrew literature and history. Forced to leave Russia in 1912, they immigrated to the United States and settled in Brooklyn. In the mid 1920s, having studied at Cooper Union, the National Academy of Design, and the Art Students League, Soyer painted scenes of life on New York's east side. His portrayals of derelicts, working people, and the unemployed around Union Square during the Depression reveal more of a poignant vision of the human condition than the art of social protest popular with many of his contemporaries. Throughout his life Soyer painted people his friends, himself, studio models with an unerring eye...Category
