Rare Allegory of France & Her Allies at War, Incl a Portrait of Louis XIV, 1676

About the Item

Antique print titled 'Balancen den Franse Oorlog'. Allegory of France and her allies at war; portrait of Louis XIV, flanked by those of Charles XI of Sweden and the Dauphin, above 7 small panels with battle scenes, 14 medallions representing other battles, with political and allegorical figures to either side. Artists and Engravers: Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708) was an important and prolific late Dutch Baroque engraver and caricaturist. De Hooghe was skilled as an etcher, draughtsman, painter, sculptor and medalist. He is best known for political caricatures of Louis XIV and propagandistic prints supporting William of Orange. During his career, de Hooghe produced over 3500 prints. He also illustrated books, and his illustrations can be found in some of the most important texts of his period. Condition: Fair, age-related toning. Small and larger tears, also affecting image. Please study image carefully.
