Renaissance Reflections: Engraved by Pigné, Directed by Dorigny, 1740
About the Item
This engraving is part of the ambitious project overseen by Sir Nicolas Dorigny, "Recueil de XC Têtes tirées des Sept Cartons des Actes des Apôtres," which translates to "Collection of 90 Heads drawn from the Seven Cartoons of the Acts of the Apostles." These were based on Raphael's famed cartoons, which are large-scale preparatory drawings for tapestries, housed at Hampton Court.
The print features two male profiles, each rendered with meticulous care to convey the textures of their hair and beards, typical of the classical figures that Raphael was known to depict. The younger man on the left is distinguished by his curls and less full beard, while the older, more stately figure on the right bears a fuller beard and a contemplative gaze.
While the work is attributed to Nicolas Pigné, indicated by "N. Pigné. sculp." on the lower right, it was Sir Nicolas Dorigny who drew from Raphael's original cartoons and orchestrated a team of distinguished engravers to produce the collection. Dorigny was instrumental in directing this process, ensuring that each engraving, like this one, captured the spirit and detail of Raphael's original work.
The collection exemplifies the collaborative spirit of the time, where artists like Pigné and Dorigny worked in concert to bring the grandeur of Renaissance art to a wider audience. It was through their combined efforts that such detailed and expressive reproductions were made possible, allowing the essence of Raphael's artistry to be disseminated and appreciated in the form of engravings.
