About the Item

Stencil Print by Sadao Watanabe, hand colored on hand-made washi paper. This image depicts the flames of fire seen on the day of Pentecost from the book of Acts. Artist’s chop mark and pencil signature are seen lower right. Dated (1982) lower left. The work is not matted and is unframed. The image measures 8"h x 7"w inches. The print is one of many Biblical images created by Watanabe in the mingei (or folk art) tradition. It is in excellent condition. Paper size: 13"h x 9"w. Sadao Watanabe was born and raised in Tokyo and was a Japanese printmaker in the 20th Century. He was famous for his Biblical prints rendered in the mingei (folk art) tradition of Japan. As a student of the master textile dye artist Serizawa Keisuke (1895-1984), Watanabe was associated with the mingei (folk art) movement. In 1958, Watanabe received first prize at the Modern Japanese Print Exhibition held in New York City for The Bronze Serpent showing Moses and the people of Israel. Watanabe's Kiku [Listening] (1960) was featured in the novelist James Michener's The Modern Japanese Print (1962), a book that introduced ten sosaku hanga artists to the Western audience. The Vatican Museum, the British Museum, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo and many other leading museums in the world have exhibited Watanabe's works. During President Lyndon Johnson's administration, Watanabe's prints were hung in the White House.

A quite large and engaging fine print by famed Japanese printmaker Yoshitoshi Mori. The print portrays an ancient Samurai, one of Mori's favorite subjects, with an arrowhead in hand. It is stamped, signed, dated (1985) and numbered (12/50) by the artist. The original 1985 price of 300,000 yen can be seen written along the bottom edge of print. I have only seen this print offered once before making it relatively rare. A must have for collectors or admirers of Yoshitoshi Mori's work or lovers of Japanese prints in general. Would stand out in any setting and/or collection. The print has been professionally framed. Framed dimensions: 37" high, 45" wide and 1" deep Considered to be one of Japan's finest and most innovative 20th century print makers, Mori has exhibited throughout the world and his works can be found in permanent collections in such museums and galleries as: Art Gallery of Greater Victoria Art Institute of Chicago Baltimore Museum of Art Barcelona Art...
