Set of three late 19th century hand colored wood engravings including: "The Chinese Picnic - Iona Island - Celestial Musicians" by William Allen Rogers, extracted from Harper's Weekly, 1883 / "Chinese Itinerant Barbers" from a photograph of "Itinerant Barbers at a Country House, China" by William Saunders, 1875 - extracted from Harper's Weekly, December 16, 1876 / and "A Holiday in Chinatown, San Francisco" by Paul Frenzeny, extracted from Harper's Weekly, March 20, 1880. Framed in gilded frames. "William Allen Rogers (1854 - 1931) was active/lived in New York, Kansas, Ohio. William Rogers is known for Magazine illustration-frontier reporting. Born Springfield, OH, 1854; died Washington, DC, Oct. 20, 1931. Cartoonist. Illustrator. Painter. Printmaker. Attended Worcester Polytechnical Institute. He learned to sketch from a railway clerk co-worker, and by age 14 was drawing cartoons for a Dayton newspaper. From 1870 to 1877, he was an engraver and artist in various cities, and then went to work for Harper's magazine. Made numerous trips to the west including trips across Kansas. Among his drawings of Kansas is "First Store in Lakin'" and he wrote an autobiography, A World Worthwhile (1922)." "William Thomas Saunders (1832-1892) was a British-born photographer who settled in China and became the leading photographer in Shanghai during the late Qing dynasty. He was the first photographer known to produce hand-coloured photographs in China." "Paul Frenzeny was born in France, 1840; died in London, England, 1902. Illustrator. Served in the French cavalry in Mexico about 1865. Working as an illustrator for Harpers by 1868. Traveled with Jules Tavernier on an expedition sponsored by Harpers Weekly that visited Kansas in 1873. Joined the Bohemian Club of San Francisco in 1874. Continued to work for Harpers publishing California and Nevada sketches until 1878. In 1879 produced views of Central America. From 1882-87 Frenzeny's work appeared in Leslie's Weekly.     Botanical Coloured Lithographs from Botanical Register ( 170 Piccadilly, London, J. Ridgway, 1822 & 1836) Framed in Green & Black with neat swirling design. These botanical drawings were commissioned by Ridgway to be printed in the Botanical Register, an illustrated magazine created by the natural history illustrator Sydenham Edwards (1769 - 1819), a Fellow of the Linnean Society who had previously worked in Curtis's Botanical Magazine and subsequently left to create his own horticultural publication. The Botanical Register ran between 1815 and 1847, publishing thirty-three volumes of fully coloured illustrations of plants, their description and accounts of their discovery and origins.
