About the Item

Set of 9 professionally framed bird prints. The framing is of recent date and the bookplate prints are from the early 1900s. Prints include: Oyster Catcher (Haematopus Palliatus): Sitting profile and perched upon a beach surrounded by shells, the black and white oyster-catcher sits low with wings folded inward. It gazes forward. Originally called the "sea pie", it was renamed in 1731 when naturalist Mark Catesby observed the bird-eating oysters. This piece is landscape in form. American Bittern (Botaurus lentiginosus): Shown in profile, the bird features feathers in varying shades of brown and black legs. Green weeds and light blue water is shown in the background. American Bitterns are medium-sized herons with thick, compact bodies. They have shorter legs and thicker necks than typical herons and a slightly hunched posture. The daggerlike bill is long, straight, and sharply pointed. There are two prints of this piece similar in style, however, one is in landscape form and the other in portrait. Red Shank (Tringa totanus): This bird is shown in the profile upon the beach with small short green blades of grass in the background. Its feathers are a marbled brown color, slightly lighter below. Orange tall legs and a pointy dagger-like beak. This piece is landscape in form. Spoonbill (Platalea): A long-legged wading bird, this piece shows a tall white-feathered bird with long black legs. Its bill is spoon-shaped and wide at the tip. These birds feed by wading through shallow water. And are found on every continent besides Antarctica. This piece is portrait in form. Whimbrel (Numenius Phaeopus): This bird is a wader, and showcases a curved beak and long black legs. A marbled breast of white, black, and brown feathers. It sits upon a lot of sand with waves and short grass in the background. This piece is portrait in form. Buff Breasted Sandpiper (Calidris Subruficollis): Shown on a background of sand with still water behind it, this bird features slightly reddish breast and raised wings. It has a short bill and yellow legs. This piece is landscape in form. Heron (Ardeidae Family): Shown in flight, the great blue Heron is a freshwater bird, with long gray and black outstretched wings and a long yellow bill. This piece is shown in landscape form on a background of calm water, rocks, and sand. Ibis (Threskiornithidae Family): The Ibis is a long leg wadding bird that inhabits wetlands, forests, and plains. Its bill is downward curved with a red breast and blue/gray plumage. Landscape in form. All frames are in a wooden frame with glass, light green or mint green mat and a blue interior step mat. Hanging wire is attached at the back of each for easy hanging. We believe these prints to be from plates from an antique book published around 1923. Dimensions: 13" 10.75" 1" 14 lbs in total weight.
