About the Item
Ernst Haeckel (1834-1919) was a biologist, philosopher and freethinker German. He promoted the theories of Charles Darwin in Germany and has developed a theory of human origins.
For Ernst Haeckel biology was strongly related with art. His artistic talent was strongly influenced by the symmetry found in nature, including those of single cell micro-organisms. His images of organisms including plankton and jellyfish illustrate the impressive beauty of the biological world and won Haeckel special recognition.
