Sutherland, Capture of La Guerrière in 1809, maritime aquatint

About the Item

Whitcombe, Thomas, artist; Sutherland, Thomas, engraver Capture of La Furieuse, August 6th. 1809 Grey toned aquatint. Engraved by T. Sutherland for The Naval Chronology of Great Britain by J. Ralfe, published 1820. Furieuse was a 38-gun frigate of the French Navy. The Royal Navy captured her in 1809 and took her into service as the fifth rate HMS Furieuse. She spent most of her British career in the Mediterranean Sea, though towards the end of the War of 1812 she served briefly on the North American station. On July 5th, the Furieuse fell in with the British Bonne Citoyenne, 20, Commander William Mounsey, in mid- Atlantic, and was chased. On the 6th, the British sloop was near enough to begin close action. The handling of the Bonne Citoyenne was clever in the extreme. With her superiority of sailing she was able to steer a zig-zag course, using each broadside in turn; and thus she got off 129 broadsides to the Furieuse's 70 in a space of 7 hours. Thus, too, her carronades were kept from overheating. Her ammunition being exhausted by this long cannonade, she took up a position athwart the Furieuse's hawse, and prepared to board, whereupon the Frenchman struck. Both vessels were much damaged, but the injuries of the Furieuse were far severer than those of the Bonne Citoyenne.

  • Rowlandson, satire, ars moriendi, dance of death, aquatint, Bring out your Dead!
    By Thomas Rowlandson
    Located in Norwich, GB
On with your dead: & I’ll contrive to hurry this old Fool alive. Original Aquatint & Etching plate with original hand colour. Full margins and only very minor marginal wear. Rudolph Ackermann, London, 1815. Thomas Rowlandson: Along with Hogarth, Gillray and Cruikshank, Thomas Rowlandson is at the uppermost peak of English satirical art. Amongst these masters, however, Rowlandson was the most gifted artist and his compositions always seemed the closest to the truth for he often lived the dissipated style of life he so memorably satirized. Along with Hogarth, Gillray and Cruikshank, Thomas Rowlandson is at the uppermost peak of English satirical art. Amongst these masters, however, Rowlandson was the most gifted artist and his compositions always seemed the closest to the truth for he often lived the dissipated style of life he so memorably satirized. After studying in both Paris and London, Thomas Rowlandson began his career as a portrait painter. By 1782, however, he devoted himself almost exclusively to his first love; caricature and satirical art. After receiving a large inheritance, Thomas Rowlandson quickly gambled it away. After losing his fortune at a thirty-six hour card game he is known to have exclaimed, "I've played the fool, but (holding up his pencils) here is my resource." Working with such British publishers as Flores and Thomas Tegg, Thomas Rowlandson designed many memorable satires. His greatest work, however, lay ahead in the early nineteenth century when he collaborated with the famous London publisher, Rudolph Ackermann, to produce some of the finest satirical series in the history of art. These included The Microcosm of London (1808), the Tour of Dr. Syntax in Search of the Picturesque (1812) and The English Dance of Death...

  • 19C Aquatint Engraving of the Quay at Waterford
    Located in Dallas, TX
Presenting a lovely 19C Aquatint Engraving of the Quay at Waterford in Waterford city in Ireland. This engraving has been hand embellished with aquatint color(s) and is from Ireland circa 1820-40. It features a scene of the Quay or Port of Waterford from circa 1820. We are basing this upon the attire of the figures in the engraving and the tall ships. It features Reginald’s Tower (still located at the Waterford Quay to this day). Georgian Quay buildings, a number of moored tall ships and row boats, barrels, horses and carts, women and British soldiers. The engraving was professionally reframed and matted in Dallas in the 1980’s and the rear of the frame says that it was “Museum Mounted and Matted”. The frame has a lovely Grecian pattern around the front. If you are Irish...
