About the Item

Tomb of King Edward IV – Engraving of Vault & Effigy, St George’s Chapel, 1790 This rare and atmospheric antique engraving captures the tomb and burial vault of King Edward IV in St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle. The composition is divided into distinct sections: at the top, inscriptions and graffiti carved into the arch above the vault are carefully recorded; beneath, the recumbent effigy of Edward IV is shown in repose, lying atop a stone tomb with surrounding candles; at the bottom, a cutaway view reveals the arched subterranean vault containing the king’s coffin. These detailed renderings give an intimate glimpse into both the ceremonial and hidden aspects of royal burial in the late medieval period. Engraved by James Basire (1730–1802), a master of architectural and antiquarian engraving, the work is based on designs by Henry Emlyn (c.1729–1815), an architect and antiquary noted for his restoration work at Windsor. Produced around 1790, the print reflects the late 18th-century antiquarian fascination with England’s medieval past, documenting details that were seldom seen by the public. It serves not only as a work of art but also as a historical record, preserving both the architectural setting and the unique inscriptions of the vault. For collectors of royal memorabilia, Gothic Revival design, or British antiquarian prints, this engraving offers an evocative and scholarly piece that bridges art, architecture, and royal history. Condition: Very good impression with general age toning and some foxing in the margins. Plate mark visible, strong paper with full margins. Framing tips: A deep walnut or black frame with a soft cream mat would enhance the engraving’s contrast while evoking the solemnity of the subject. Consider UV-protective glass to preserve the paper’s tone. Overall size: 71 x 56 cm. Image size: 0.001 x 56.5 x 45 cm.
