About the Item
Antique Botanical Print – Orchids Paphinia rugosa & Zygopetalum xanthinum
An exceptionally vibrant and rare double orchid plate featuring Paphinia rugosa and Zygopetalum xanthinum, from the celebrated botanical work *Reichenbachia: Orchids Illustrated and Described* (1888–1894). This large-format chromolithograph showcases two distinct and exotic orchid species, each rendered with remarkable detail and lifelike coloration.
In the upper composition, Paphinia Rugosa is shown in bloom with its bold, pendulous flowers that display a striking combination of creamy yellow sepals and deep burgundy petals speckled with fine markings. The flowers appear to burst forth from a lush bed of moss, while long, arching green leaves frame the scene. Known for its dramatic form and rich coloration, this orchid is native to tropical forests of South America and prized for its showy inflorescences.
In the lower section of the plate, *Zygopetalum xanthinum* is depicted as a lush cluster of bright yellow blooms with prominent crimson and white labellums. The contrast between the radiant yellow petals and the darker, leafy green base creates a striking visual harmony. The genus *Zygopetalum* is known for its fragrant, long-lasting flowers and is native to parts of Central and South America.
Both illustrations were drawn from life by the renowned botanical artist Henry Moon (1857–1905), whose signature appears in each vignette. The chromolithography was executed by Gustav Leutzsch, reflecting the high production standards of the *Reichenbachia* series under publisher Henry Frederick Conrad Sander. These plates were printed in limited numbers and intended for wealthy collectors and botanical institutions.
This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a paired orchid print from one of the most ambitious and beautiful botanical works of the 19th century. Its vivid colors and dual composition make it especially attractive for collectors, orchid enthusiasts, and lovers of fine botanical art.
