Victorian Elegance: A Trio of Ornamental Foliage from 1880 Paris
About the Item
These are three botanical prints from "Les Plantes à Feuillage Coloré: Tome Second," published in Paris in 1880 by J. Rothschild, Editeur. Each print depicts a single plant leaf with significant detail and coloration, suggesting the emphasis on the ornamental foliage plants that were quite popular during the Victorian era.
- The first print on the left shows a leaf from the plant "Dieffenbachia seguine" (as indicated by the label "Dieffenbachia Seguina IV"). This particular variety has a distinctive pattern with broad, light-colored stripes on a darker green background, reminiscent of the characteristic variegation often found in Dieffenbachia species.
- The center print depicts a leaf from the "Coleus verschaffeltii" (labeled as "Coleus Verschaffeltii V"). The leaf is intricately patterned with a rich mix of purple and green, having a serrated edge and a slightly wrinkled texture. Coleus plants are known for their colorful foliage which can range from green to vibrant reds, purples, and yellows.
- The third print on the right illustrates a leaf of the "Caladium bicolor," also known as "Caladium 'Mme. M. Sander' " (as indicated by the label "Caladium Mme M. Sander VI"). This leaf is heart-shaped with a central green vein structure and a contrasting white to light green pattern that creates a lace-like appearance over the leaf surface.
All three prints are executed with precise botanical accuracy and artistic fineship, capturing the color gradients and textural details of each leaf. They were likely intended not only as scientific illustrations but also as objects of beauty to appeal to horticultural enthusiasts of the time.
