Vintage Botanical Elegance: A Triptych of 19th Century Colored Foliage Studies
About the Item
These prints from "Les Plantes à Feuillage Coloré" Tome Second, published in Paris in 1880 with J. Rothschild as the editor, are fine examples of botanical illustration from the 19th century. They depict three different plants, each renowned for their distinctive and colorful foliage, which is likely why they were included in a volume specifically about plants with colored foliage.
1. **Dracaena terminalis (VIII)**: The leftmost illustration shows a plant labeled as "Dracaena terminalis, Var. Stricta". This plant is characterized by its elongated leaves with a vibrant deep pink central stripe flanked by darker green areas speckled with pink. This species is known for its striking appearance and is commonly used as an ornamental plant.
2. **Begonia rex (IX)**: The middle print is of "Begonia rex, Var. Dabldara". This begonia variety is particularly noted for its large, heart-shaped leaves with a textured surface patterned with green and dark green to almost black markings. The edges of the leaves have a serrated look with a light pinkish hue.
3. **Pelargonium zonale (X)**: The print on the right shows "Pelargonium zonale, Var. Tricolor". Pelargoniums, often called geraniums, are appreciated for their multicolored leaves, and the variety depicted here has roundish leaves with zones of dark green, light green, and creamy white, with hints of red and pink towards the edges. The leaf patterns suggest they are variegated, which was a desirable trait for collectors at the time.
These illustrations are likely lithographs, a common method of the time for creating such detailed and color-accurate botanical prints. Each print is numbered and includes the name of the variety being depicted, which reflects the taxonomic practice of the era and serves as a reference for botanists and horticulturalists. The detail and coloration would have been essential for identification purposes and for sharing knowledge about exotic plants among enthusiasts and scholars across the world.
