Whistles on the Wing: The European Teal by Magnus von Wright, 1929

About the Item

This original image is a vintage bird print titled 'Anas Crecca', which depicts the European teal. This is a small dabbling duck, known for its striking green wing patch and whistling calls. The artwork comes from "Svenska Foglar Efter Naturen Och Pa Stenritade," a work by Magnus von Wright. Magnus von Wright, born on June 13, 1805, in Sweden, and passing on July 5, 1868, was a notable Swedish-Finnish artist. Although he was of Swedish birth, much of his influence is recognized in Finland. He was educated in the Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm and is celebrated for his contribution to ornithological art, in addition to his work as an educator. Along with his brothers Wilhelm and Ferdinand, Magnus von Wright contributed significantly to Scandinavian natural history and art. Their collective work is considered important for its scientific accuracy and artistic value. Beyond birds, Magnus's repertoire included landscapes that capture the serene and natural beauty of the Scandinavian environment. "Svenska Foglar," the source of this print, is one of the significant ornithological works in Swedish literature, and it contributed greatly to the study and appreciation of birds in Sweden and Finland during the 19th century. The prints, characterized by their detail and naturalistic portrayal, were based on careful observation, which was a hallmark of Magnus's approach to illustrating wildlife.
