Thomas C. Strobel "Optical" Three-Dimensional Op Art

About the Item

Thomas Carey Strobel "Optical" Three-Dimensional Op Art This is an unusual piece of three-dimensional Op Art aptly titled "Optical." The work is constructed of a series of 3D acrylic eyes that appear to float on metal posts within the shadowbox frame. 3D eyes also cover the backplate of the art piece. The interior edges of the shadowbox are mirrored, to reflect the art within. This piece is signed, dated and titled en verso. Strobel's obituary is also attached to the back. This piece is in very good original vintage condition, with some discoloration on a few of the eyes, but no damage to the piece. Thomas C. Stobel (1930-2001) was an American artist. Born in Nashville and raised in Illinois, Strobel served in the US Army in Germany, before attending the School of the Art Institute in Chicago, where he received a BA Fine Arts. On a Fulbright grant, he returned to Germany and studied Gestalt psychology and painting at the Staatliche Kunstakademie in Dusseldorf, where he received an MA Fine Arts. His later paintings and sculptures often mixed subconscious, Jungian symbolism with the science of perception. However, he was best known for his “Op Art” of the mid-1960s and 1970s, which produced optical illusions through repeated geometric patterns. An undercurrent throughout his career was a desire to have his pieces seen as serious artwork, and himself as a serious artist. At the height of his popularity in the 1960s, he produced Op Art for automobile exteriors. Strobel taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the mid-1960s, followed by stints at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Northwestern University and Northern Illinois University, where he focused on studies of landscape and nature. Measurements are as follows: Framed Piece - 16" W x 4" D x 16.25" H Image Size - 14.5" W x 14.75" H
